Vaccinations & Titers: All pets who enter OtterTail (for boarding, grooming, training, etc.) must be current on all core vaccinations/titers. No guest will be permitted on the premises without record of CURRENT vaccinations/titers. We will make no exceptions to this rule for the safety and welfare of all of our guests. Dogs: DHPP, Rabies, Bordatella (kennel cough must be given within 6 months of vacation)
Food: We feed and recommend VeRus (click to learn more!) We are happy to feed your pet this all-natural, high-quality, antibiotic, hormone, wheat, corn, and gluten free food (available in our boutique). If you choose to bring your own food from home, all dry foods must be in meal size portions in individual zip-loc bags & labeled with each pet's name. We cannot accept any open containers or bags. If your dog has a special diet, we have a kitchen area where we can warm &/or prepare special diets and there is no extra charge for feeding your dog what it needs! The most important thing is that your pet continues to receive the very best care - just like at home.
Medication: We will gladly administer medications to your pet. There will be no additional charge if your pet eats the medication along with a meal without care. Please bring all medications in their original containers as dispensed from the veterinarian. If we have to give the medication orally, there is a charge of $1/administration. Injections will be $5/administration.
Vacationing more than 4 days: Because it is our goal for your pet to have the ultimate vacation while you are away (which mean having fun, running, playing, swimming, & rolling in the dirt!), all canine guests visiting for 4 or more days will receive a Wash-n-Go bath at the owner's expense. That service includes a basic shampoo & blow dry which costs $18-35 based on the size, coat & condition of the dog.
Veterinary Care: Should your pet become ill, we will first contact your personal veterinarian on file. If your vet is not available, one of our qualified on-call alternate vets will be consulted. Please review our web page for a full understanding of our innovative Health Warranty Program that protects the best interests of your pet and saves you from unanticipated veterinary bills.
Reservations: Please call ahead to ensure accommodations are available to meet the boarding needs of you and your pet. Every reservation requires a credit card guarantee. Any cancellations made inside of 72 hours of the reservation will be charged for a 2-night stay per pet.
Tour OtterTail: We welcome the opportunity to show off our facility to you! Please call or email us to schedule a personal tour with Karen. We schedule tours at times when it is least disruptive to our guests. Thank you for your advanced planning and understanding!
Preparing Your Pet for Boarding: Most pets, like people, enjoy an opportunity for a change in scenery, step up in exercise, fresh air, and new friends. Once they familiarize themselves with their new surroundings, most of our guests thoroughly enjoy their stay at OtterTail! However, there are a few critical steps that must be taken to make the most out of their stay: Before an extended stay, please bring your dog for short trips and brief overnight stays to mentally prepare for the longer vacation with us. It's worth the effort for everyone's sake! Do not overfeed or increase your pet's normal diet right before coming to OtterTail. The extra food can lead to an upset stomach and increased stress, and it's really not necessary. Our pets are extremely sensitive to our emotions - and they will often reflect in themselves what we are feeling and experiencing in our hearts. It's why we love them so much! With this in mind, it is IMPERATIVE that no member of your family displays an emotional "farewell" scene. This will only increase your pet's anxiety level (not to mention yours and mine!). You must remain confident, calm, and very matter-of-fact when you depart. Trust that your companion will be in the best possible care in your absence and that you have made the best possible arrangements for his/her care - and leave your pet with that knowledge and confidence, as well.
What To Pack: Any special dietary requirements, medications, toys and treats (no raw-hide). Every guest is provided with a superior quality Kuranda dog bed. These beds are extremely comfortable & clean and therefore, we do not accept any additional bedding. Your pet will have a shoe-box size basket for personal items (including food from home), so please keep that in mind when packing for your friend's vacation with us. We also retail a wide variety of new and interesting items in our boutique, so don't feel pressured to find things at home - your pet can choose when you arrive!
Parasite Prevention Program: All guests must be on a parasite prevention program for fleas/ticks/worms. We can provide this service when you arrive for an additional fee. Guests who arrive with any of these parasites will be bathed and treated at the owner's expense.
Puppies, kittens, or recently adopted shelter dogs: Dogs & cats that are at least 16 weeks old are welcomed - as long as they have received at least 3 vaccinations, a rabies vaccination, and a Bordatella vaccine (dogs only) as documented by your veterinarian. We regret that we are unable to accept pets that have been in a shelter or rescue facility for up to 30 days prior to their vacation due to the extended incubation period of contagious diseases.
Final Thoughts: No aggressive dogs or bitches in season will be accepted. If your bitch comes into season during her stay with us, she will be removed from the kennel immediately and you or your emergency contact person will be required to find other accommodations for her. The same policy holds true for any dog that becomes dangerously aggressive while at OtterTail.
